A naturopathic doctor’s top healthy skin tips for winter

Here in the northern hemisphere, winter has officially wrapped us in its snowy embrace… and it’s the perfect time to align with Nature’s wisdom for your health – and yes, that includes the health of your skin!

With shorter, darker, and colder days, ❄️ winter ❄️ is the season for slowing down, resting, relaxing, and retreating into more stillness… so you can be ready for the energetic expansion that is SPRING very soon! (yayyyy!)

(I’m obsessed with the spring season – it’s my absolute FAVORITE. 😍 But winter has its perks too…namely, the permission to SLEEP IN!)

I imagine you’ve been feeling the cozy winter-y vibes too…

To keep your body AND your skin healthy all winter long, here are my top tips for aligning with the energetics of the season for optimal health:

🔥 Stay Warm: Layer up in your favorite sweaters, socks, and scarves. End your day with a hot bath. Keep your feet and neck wrapped and warm all day long – even indoors!

🍲 Nourish with Warm, Savory Foods: Winter is all about hearty meals. Think squash, curries, sweet potatoes, and yummy soups and stews. Make sure to add in lots of warming spices, like cayenne, rosemary, and “chai” spices (cinnamon, ginger, clove).

🧈 Eat More Healthy Fats: Eating healthy fats help maintain your skin’s natural oil barrier, protecting it against the winter dryness. Eat more foods rich in omega 3s (like wildcaught salmon); increase your consumption of healthy fats like grass-fed beef, olive oil, and butter; and consider taking cod liver oil.

💦 Hydrate Your Skin From Within: Winter weather naturally dries out your skin. Yet a dry, disrupted skin barrier is more permeable to irritants and allergens, which makes it more prone to inflammation. Drink plenty of filtered, remineralized water and up your intake of herbal teas (like my Clear Skin Tea and my Rosy Glow Tea!)

💤 Catch Those Zzz’s: Embrace the longer nights by snuggling into bed early. Give yourself permission to sleep in whenever possible. Longer nights = longer sleep cycles! Your skin (and your circadian rhythm!) will thank you.

🧘‍♀️ Reflect and Relax: Winter is the perfect time for some inner journeying. Grab a journal, light a candle, and fill your heart with gratitude.
