A simple tallow balm recipe for healthy, clear skin

Today I’m sharing with you a simple tallow balm recipe for healthy, clear skin. It’s incredibly easy to make and super nourishing–and it will transform your skin!

Tallow is rendered beef fat, ideally made with fat from grass-fed cows. It’s a nourishing skin food rich in skin-loving nutrients and lipids, helping the skin barrier repair itself and calming active inflammation like acne.

I’ve been using tallow balm now for about 6 months (along with my husband), and our skin has been loving it. I use it every night as the last step or second-to-last step in my skincare routine (often layering a few drops of one of my Wild Roots Alchemy face serums on top) and sometimes in the morning too, if I need a little extra hydration.

This simply DIY recipe is made with just 2 ingredients (3 if you scent it with essential oils). I scented my tallow balm with blue chamomile essential oil, which made it smell amaaaazing!!! If you prefer to leave it unscented, the tallow does have a subtle “nutty” smell, but it doesn’t have a “beefy” smell like you might suspect.

Tallow Balm

Materials

  • 1/2 cup grass-fed tallow
  • 2 tablespoons liquid oil such as jojoba oil (you can also infuse the oil first with herbs like Yarrow or Calendula for added benefits)
  • 20-25 drops blue chamomile essential oil optional

Instructions

  • Melt the tallow in a double boiler (I just put a a Pyrex glass quart cup in a stockpot filled with simmering water).
  • Remove from heat and add the liquid oil, stir well.
  • Add essential oils, if using.
  • At this point, you can pour it directly into small glass containers, or else you can let the mixture cool for 1-2 hours (put in the fridge to chill faster) if you want to make whipped tallow balm, which has a smoother consistency and is easier to apply.
  • If you're making whipped tallow balm, use an electric mixer to whip it until it looks like frosting.
  • Spoon into small jars and enjoy!

Notes

If your tallow balm turns out too soft or creamy (more like a lotion than a balm), you can use less liquid oil or more tallow to thicken its consistency.
