Alchemy is the process of transformation. Plants take in light from the cosmos, anchoring and transforming the energy from above for its purpose here on Earth. “As above, so below.”
Alchemy is based on a holistic understanding of the Universe, focusing on the relationship between consciousness and matter. Ancient alchemists identified patterns and energetic forces within nature, using these symbols to derive meaning and a greater understanding of creation and the workings of the Universe (such as astrology and the four elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air). In its physical manifestation, ancient alchemy appeared focused on turning metals into gold; however, alchemy has long understood the interconnectedness of the Universe and the significant process of evolving into a higher consciousness.
As humans, we’ve always had a love affair with gold. It is the purest metal; in fact, one of the few metals that the forces of the Earth cannot break down or transform on its own. Gold symbolizes the spirit of this planet–the manifestation of our solar system’s Sun here on Earth–reflecting the Sun externally and our own innate spirit internally. In essence, Gold is the ultimate physical manifestation of evolved consciousness.
To transform something into gold is to turn it into pure light, so we can think of the alchemical process as the transformation of a substance into Light or pure consciousness. Alchemy is not limited to the physical sphere; the alchemical principles pervade everything in our world, allowing transformation of our inner experiences as well. Alchemy is the drawing in of pure awareness, and ultimately, it is this very conscious presence that is transformative. It allows us to remember that we are spiritual beings having a physical experience by transforming our inner awareness and by bridging our inner and outer worlds. Reminding us that everything is interconnected; that we are all One and part of everything in the Universe.
By exploring our ancient understanding of the Universe and reconnecting to nature and its abundant plant medicine, we reawaken to our wild roots–the roots that nourish and sustain us, and remind us that we are already whole and at home here on Earth.
